Fly Fishing at Millstream Farm

Millstream Farm fly fishing is an activity for those who love combining nature with sports. We have 12 weirs, suitable for beginners, and three ponds and five dams for the more experienced fly fisherman. We stock from 800g to 1,5kg biweekly and 2,5kg+ once per quarter. We also stock Brown trout once per quarter.

Millstream Farm allows the use of waders and kick boats on the dams.

Trails at Millstream Farm

There are four marked walking and hiking trails on the farm. These vary between  2km – 8km and cater for all ages and fitness levels. Several unmarked, but well worn, paths lead from each cottage to the various dams. Detailed maps are available at our reception area at a nominal fee, or you can access it here.

Every Saturday morning our resident Environmental Officer, when available, can also take you on a guided walk. Tag along to learn about the history of Millstream Farm, its wildlife, birds, flowers and trees. (Bookings are essential – please book at reception 24hrs in advance as the group is limited to 10 people. Departure times depend on the season and the walk is approximately 2 hours).

Bicycle Hire & Mountain Biking

There is an 8.3km marked mountain bike trail on the farm that starts near the reception area. Maps are available at reception at a nominal fee. A limited number of bicycles are for hire, and they may not be taken off the farm. Please enquire at the reception area for more information

Horse Riding

Millstream Farm offers daily guided horse rides for children and adults. The rides are suitable for inexperienced and intermediate level riders. Most of the game on the farm can be seen at close quarters during the one-hour rides; a guide accompanies all rides. Please enquire at reception for times, costs and availability

Game and wildlife

Spotting game is a fun activity on the farm for young and old. From antelope to porcupines, the farm offers unforgettable moments to capture on camera. Remember, these animals are wild and must be treated accordingly. No hunting or discharging of firearms is permitted on the farm.

Game is not the only attraction to be found on the grounds of Millstream Farm. The Highlands of Mpumalanga are renowned for their abundance of wildflowers and Millstream Farm is no exception. 

There are 34 different wildflower families listed and some 100 species identified on the farm. Some of the more spectacular flowers are the Brunsvigia radulosa (Tumbleweed), Scadoxus puniceus (Royal paint brush) Zantedeschia rehmannii (Pink calla lily), Hesperantha coccinea (Scarlet river lily) and an abundance of grassland orchids. Boat Hire

Go for a row on Lake Millstream in one of our rowing boats. Oars and rowlocks can be collected from reception for a nominal refundable deposit. The use of boats is limited to three hours at a time unless prior arrangements are made with management. For your safety, it’s essential to wear life jackets at all times, and an adult must accompany children under 16 years of age. Please return the boats to the jetties after use. Life jackets are available at reception.

Birdwatching

Stunning in the summer months and hard work, but rewarding in the winter, there are plenty of birds to see at Millstream Farm. Over 170 bird species, of which 30 species are migratory, have been positively identified. There is a bird hide tucked away on the North-Western side of Wordsworth Waters. An updated bird list is available from reception.

The species spotted include typical highveld, mountain grassland and water birds like Red Collard Widows, Red and Yellow Bishops. L.B.J.s such as Wing-snapping and Cloud Cisticolas can be spotted. Cormorants, Crakes, Dabchicks, Bitterns and Flufftails, with common Raptors like the Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk, Black-shouldered Kites and Jackal Buzzards have also made their appearance on the farm.

The recreational centre

The recreation centre is located adjacent to the stables, close to reception, and offers the following activities:

• A children’s playroom with a jungle gym, play house, dress up and much more

• Floodlit tennis court
• Pool table 
• Darts
• Library
• Board games are available on request.

Heated Indoor Pool

Come rain or shine, at Millstream Farm, the option to swim is always available in our heated indoor pool; it is popular even when it’s crisp and frosty outside!

Sauna

Recharge and destress in the sauna. A nominal fee is charged per hour. Bookings can be made at reception.
